Guide to oven fault repair

When an oven stops working, it can be tempting to assume that it needs replacing. However, many common oven and cooker faults can be repaired, often for considerably less than the cost of buying and installing a new appliance.

At Oakey & Son Ltd, we have many years of electrical experience and carry out cooker and oven fault finding and repairs. Our approach is simple: diagnose the problem properly, explain what has gone wrong and help you decide whether repairing or replacing the appliance makes the most sense.

What are the most common oven faults?

An oven can stop working for many different reasons. A fault with one component doesn't necessarily mean the whole appliance needs replacing.

  • Some of the problems we investigate include:
  • Oven not heating up
  • Fan running but no heat
  • Oven tripping the electrics
  • Faulty oven elements
  • Thermostat problems
  • Oven fans not working
  • Faulty switches and controls
  • Cooker connection problems
  • Electrical supply faults
  • Intermittent oven and cooker faults

One of the most common examples is a failed heating element. The oven may appear to have stopped working properly, but the rest of the appliance can still be perfectly serviceable.

Replacing the faulty component may be all that is required to get it working again.

Is it cheaper to repair an oven or replace it?

This depends on the age and condition of the oven and, most importantly, what has actually gone wrong.

If the appliance is otherwise in good condition and only needs a replaceable component, an oven repair can be considerably cheaper than purchasing a new appliance.

There are also additional costs involved in replacing an oven that can easily be overlooked.

A replacement appliance needs to be purchased, delivered and installed. A built-in oven also needs to fit the existing kitchen unit and be suitable for the electrical supply available.

For this reason, it is often worth having the fault diagnosed before deciding to replace the appliance.

Why proper fault finding matters

Not every apparent cooker or oven fault is necessarily caused by the appliance itself.

Cookers and ovens form part of your home's electrical installation, which means a problem can sometimes involve the electrical supply, cooker circuit, isolation switch or connections.

As experienced electricians, Oakey & Son Ltd can investigate the electrical side of the problem as well as the appliance itself.

Proper fault finding means identifying the cause of the problem rather than simply replacing parts in the hope that one of them fixes it.

When is an oven not worth repairing?

Repair isn't always the right answer.

There are occasions when we would recommend considering replacement instead. An appliance may be particularly old, in poor overall condition, have several faults or require expensive components.

Replacement parts for some older appliances can also be difficult or uneconomical to obtain.

We believe a repair should make financial sense.

Our aim is to identify the fault and give you straightforward advice. If repairing the appliance is a sensible option, we can explain what is required. If we believe you would be better putting the money towards a replacement, we'll tell you.

Repairing an oven can also reduce waste

There is another benefit to repairing an appliance that still has plenty of useful life remaining.

Replacing an entire cooker or oven because one component has failed creates unnecessary waste. A replacement appliance also needs to be manufactured, transported and installed.

Where a safe and economical repair is possible, keeping an existing appliance working for longer can be a more sensible choice.

Should I repair or replace my oven?

A good starting point is simple: don't assume you need a new oven until you know what is wrong with your existing one.

If your cooker or oven is otherwise in reasonable condition, having the fault diagnosed could save you the expense and inconvenience of replacing it unnecessarily.
